Piper reached back for a pillow and handed it to Hannah. “Smother me with this. Please. It’s the humane thing to do.”
“Bet you’re used to men falling all over themselves to make you happy, huh?” He tossed the can up in the air, caught it. “Sorry, I’m not going to be one of them.”
“Don’t go sniffing around the older one. Piper,” Brendan muttered. “And don’t ask me to explain why, either.”
“Listen up,” Brendan said to the younger one. “I heard what you said. I respect you for saying it. You’ve got a nice, solid backbone for someone from Los Angeles. But I don’t follow orders, I give them.” He let that sink in. “I yelled at her because that’s what people do when there’s a close call.” Over the top of Hannah’s head, he met Piper’s gaze. “I won’t do it again.”
“Oh no.” A serious expression dawned on her face. “Do you think there is a female fisherman hiding in this pie, Brendan?” His bark of laughter made her jump. Hell, it made him jump. Had anyone ever caught him off guard like that? No, he didn’t think so.
“Are we friends, Brendan?” “No,” he called back, without missing a beat. Her mouth hung open, a laugh huffing out of her as she closed the door. Hannah sat up and asked, “What the hell is going on there?” Slowly, she shook her head. “I have no freaking idea.”
“Oh, look at that.” Her pulse stuttered. “Brendan followed me.” She tapped his profile and choked. “Oh. I’m the only one he’s following. He just joined.”
No Name bar. Upstairs apartment. Piper Bellinger. Needs padding installed on the base of the top bunk. She keeps hitting her head. Captain Taggart
Piper tried to avoid Hannah’s teasing pokes in her side. “Brendan no like Piper boo-boo. Brendan fix.”
When she glanced up at Brendan, he was following her actions closely, a line between his brows. Memorizing how she took her coffee? No way.
“Wait, I think . . .” Hannah whispered. “I think he’s building you that freaking pergola.”
She didn’t even know which part of her was in command. Her head, her heart, her lady business. Or maybe they all were, three bitches hitting the switches of her control panel.
Fox jabbed the air with a finger. “You owe me. Big time.” “You’re right. I do.” Brendan headed for the door, ready for a night of planning. “How about I give you the Della Ray?”
“It’s that Fleetwood Mac album. The one that spoke to me at the expo.” She tried to laugh, but it came out choked. “Fox must have tracked it down.” Piper gave a low whistle. Hannah continued to stare down at the album. “That was so . . . friendly of him.”
