Beyond the benefits that would accrue to those who serve, and the role they would play in defeating the virus, I believe the country would reap a larger dividend. A service program like this could help bridge partisan divides. Consider that between 1965 and 1975, more than two thirds of the members of Congress had served their country in uniform. The important legislative achievements of those years were shaped by leaders who shared that bond, larger than politics or party. Today, fewer than 20 percent have that bond.
