Every time, I was “unreasonable” for reading between the lines. But that’s where the truth always lies, isn’t it? The unsaid between.
“But your opinion, Katria…I’m finding your opinion is worth more and more by the minute. Worth more than all the lost magics of the vampir in the southeast and all the ancient powers swirling in the mer waters of the north.”
Davien rests his hand on mine over the neck of the instrument. “Go and play, for me. Fill my world with your song.”
“I—I don’t want to be hurt.” Anything more than a whisper would feel like a scream now. He’s so close. A breath away. A mere quiver and my lips would be on his. A shiver tickles my spine, tempting me to test the theory. “I would never hurt you.”
“We only do as we desire.” He looks me dead in the eyes as he speaks. “Nothing more, nothing less. No expectations.” “And no feelings,”
“Let me out.” “Why do you think love, of all things, is pain?” “I have seen what happens when two people fall in love. One collapses into the other, all sense of self, and worth, and strength crumbling under the boot of the party who ends up on top.”
“Love is the closest thing we have to meaning in this world. The love of a mother for her children, the love between friends, the love of a husband and wife, love for who we are and all those who strove before us to hand us the world we have now—love is why we live, why we fight, why we carry on when things get tough…it is not always easy. But it is our reprieve from true hardship, not the hardship itself.”
