Our current calendar adds one extra day every four years on 29 February, but it also drops three of these leap days every 400 years to make sure the calculation is as precise as possible. So there is no leap day on years that end in ‘00’ but which aren’t divisible by 400, meaning that while 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years, the year 2000 was.
