Words die in my throat when he tilts his head and those intense eyes—one cobalt blue and the other emerald green—slice through me like a hot knife through butter. I’ve seen those haunting eyes before. Dread has my stomach coiling because I know exactly who I’m staring at. Trenton Knox.
However, it’s the utter fear swimming in those bright green eyes that makes my dick hard.
I’d give just about anything to know why—despite how intimidating and scary he is—he looks like the most broken person I’ve ever seen.
His rough voice is a menacing rumble in my ear. “Because I knew you’d be in pain.” A cold sweat breaks over me and a weird twist goes through my chest when his tongue darts out and he licks my tear-stained cheek. “And I wanted to see it.”
The only thing better than killing a wild animal is catching it in a trap. Because then they have nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide.
Once I enter the spacious kitchen, I make a beeline for the coffee maker because caffeine is pretty much how I survive.
“Just because their perception of you has shifted, doesn’t mean yours has to.”
“I’m fine.” And even though it’s not true…I pretend it is. Because projecting the image I want people to see is something I’ve always been good at.
I bet if I turned myself into a bottle of merlot, she’d finally pay attention to me.
“Tell me you don’t want this.” “I don’t want to want this,” I whisper, the last of my willpower shattering like glass. Because everything was so much easier when I hated him. His gruff voice cuts through the air. “That makes two of us.”
However, he fucked up. Because if you’re going to keep a wild animal in a trap and taunt it with its favorite toy... You better make damn sure they don’t end up loving that toy more than they fear you.
“I couldn’t save her, but I can save you.”
She’s the feeling in my chest I’ve never experienced before, but would kill to hold on to forever.
