“So what’s going to happen with Viola?” Marconi asked. “She’ll be let out,” Gretchen said, mournfully washing down her last bite with the dregs of her beer. “Put in the foster system unless Ainsley comes back to claim her. I’m sure that will do wonders for her developing psychopathy.” Marconi raised her brows in silent agreement, and Gretchen wondered what steps the woman would take to monitor Viola. They couldn’t really justify it legally, but Shaughnessy had done it to Gretchen for three decades, so she guessed they’d find a way to keep an eye on Viola.

“If I hadn’t been there, would you have made up some story for Reed?” Marconi continued as if she hadn’t interrupted. “That he hadn’t confessed, that he’d simply shot himself?” “And let Viola rot in prison?” Gretchen surmised. The answer of course was yes, but Gretchen didn’t want to break Marconi’s little empath heart. “I guess we’ll never know.” Marconi seemed to see through her anyway. “Even though you were falsely accused?” Gretchen looked away. But contrary to what Marconi seemed to think, Gretchen didn’t see herself in Viola. She saw herself in Sebastian. “You don’t know that,” Gretchen said.
