But by the ninth century, Greek religion was pessimistic and uncanny, its gods dangerous, cruel, and arbitrary.6 In time, the Greeks would achieve a civilization of dazzling brilliance, but they never lost their sense of tragedy, and this would be one of their most important religious contributions to the Axial Age.
