Emotionally Healthy Discipleship: Moving from Shallow Christianity to Deep Transformation

The term Daily Office (also called fixed-hour prayer) has a rich biblical history going back to David, who practiced set times of prayer seven times a day (Psalm 119:164); Daniel, who prayed three times a day (Daniel 6:10); and devout Jews in Jesus’s day, who prayed three times a day. The purpose of the Daily Office is to create a rhythm that enables us to stop at set times in order to be present with God during all of our active hours. Stopping three to four times a day to be with God has utterly transformed my spiritual life since I integrated this practice nearly twenty years ago. It has anchored me to be aware of Jesus’s presence in my doing-for him like few other practices.

Success is becoming the person God calls you to become, and doing what God calls you to do—in his way, and according to his timetable.
