Among all the major world cultures and major religions, Christian men and women have often been the ones working to empower women and set them free from the cultural institutions that entrap them. For centuries in China, a common cultural practice was to cripple the feet of young girls for life through the horrid practice of “foot binding.” This was done to supposedly make them more pleasurable for men later in their lives.
