He also pioneered the idea that statistics could be used not just to analyse astronomical observations or the behaviour of gases, but social, psychological and medical questions such as the prevalence of suicide, obesity or crime. Babbage and Quetelet were later to be founders of the Royal Statistical Society; Nightingale, as I have mentioned, became its first female fellow.
