her scoundrel of a sibling was nowhere to be found.
You know what will happen if Father catches you.”
her usual dull shades of gray disappointment.
You’ve waited your whole life for this, wished on every fallen star, prayed as every ship came into port that it would be that magical one carrying the mysterious Caraval performers. You want this even more than I do.”
Your wedding will be ten days from today, at the end of next week, on the twentieth. If anything gets in the way of it, more than your sister’s face will bleed.”
“I’m changing my offer about taking you both from the isle. I’ll do it for free, if you decide you want to leave. My ship sets off from port tomorrow at dawn. Come find me if you change your mind.”
She should have been the one whose head her father held under the water.
Scarlett thrust her tickets toward Julian. “You can have all three. Use them or sell them, as long as you leave here early, and without Donatella.”
world spun around Scarlett until she didn’t know if her eyes were open or closed. She was falling falling falling.
“Relax, Crimson—” “It’s Scarlett.”
“I think you’ve forgotten how to live, and your sister is trying to remind you,”
“Where’s Tella?” Scarlett repeated. “I must have dropped her off on a different part of the beach.”
It didn’t seem fair that someone so infuriating could look so close to perfect.
Scarlett only knew how to survive through caution.
Dreams that come true can be beautiful, but they can also turn into nightmares when people won’t wake up.”
Scarlett wanted to say it was beautiful or marvelous. But those sentiments seemed suddenly too common for such an uncommon sight.
“Occasionally people confuse fantasy with reality.
He risked what he’d wanted so she would be all right.
Scarlett fought the unexpected urge to reach out and hug him.
My little liar, Julian mouthed,
poison dressed up in an attractive bottle.
“This isn’t funny. We can’t sleep in here together. If anyone finds out, I’ll be utterly ruined.”
Tella was the most important person in the world to Scarlett, but it always broke Scarlett to know her sister did not feel the same way.
“Although if you need some practice before your wedding, I’m more than willing to help for free.”
“I think he’s the most attractive person I’ve ever seen.”
It smelled of laughter and boasts,
It would have been a mistake to kiss him, yet she felt … disappointed.
Not quite sure how far she’d already fallen, she imagined loving him would feel like falling in love with darkness, frightening and consuming yet utterly beautiful when the stars came out.
The world tasted like lies and ashes when Scarlett woke.
if Julian really was Legend, everything significant to her had only been part of a game to him.
Scarlett had only a blink to panic as she watched her father step around the corner.
she looked down the hall and saw Dante’s twisted dead body, and Julian standing over it.
“I’ll keep you safe,” Julian whispered.
Like a teardrop the moon had cried.
“All this time, I thought she was my fiancée.”
Scarlett witnessed something she’d not seen before. Her father looked afraid.
Finally she understood what Tella meant when she’d said there was more to life than being safe.
She remembered thinking falling for him would be like falling in love with darkness, but now she imagined he was more like a starry night: the constellations were always there, constant, magnificent guides against the ever-present black.
With Julian it wasn’t about protection—she just wanted to be with him. The boy who’d saved her from drowning in more ways than one.
“I’m not afraid of your secrets.”
Every touch created colors she had never seen. Colors as soft as velvet and as sharp as sparks that turned into stars.
“And your fiancé has paid quite a sum for you. I don’t see why I need to make him wait any longer before enjoying what he’s bought.”
So quiet it almost sounded like a memory,
I’ve had Julian working with me for the entire game.”
And it might have been a beautiful moment, if Legend had not chosen that same instant to pull out a knife and stab Julian in the chest.
“Scar?” A petite figure sat up in the bed. Honey-blond curls bounced around a face that might have been angelic, if it wasn’t for her devil’s grin.
“Don’t make me choose between the two loves of my life.”
