Looking at it now, I’m struck by the thought that our greatest endeavors are less about what we set out to do than what we bring back.
I can’t know the answer to this question, but I can say with certainty that orienting one’s life around a peak like Mount Everest is a perilous proposition, not only because the mountain will likely kill you eventually, but because it may also consume your soul in the process.
As I mention at the end of this story, I believe that our greatest endeavors are less about what we set out to do than what we bring back. And I hope that what I’ve brought back to my children, Tommy, Lilla, Matt, and Will, over the course of my travels, is the lesson that we give our lives meaning and purpose by caring deeply about things—regardless of whether those things make sense to other people or not.
