And every once in a while, that motorist to whom we have just given the finger, or that woman whom we have just ogled, catches our eye, and we freeze. We see ourselves in their gaze, our rage and our lust. We probably don’t like what we see in those moments, but they have a kind of power nevertheless. They remind us that we are being watched.
