“You’re mine, Sawyer.” My eyes widen, and he clears his throat. “My assistant. You support them, but ultimately, you’re mine.” His eyes flare when he says it, and I can’t help but wonder what it would be like to be his.
It’s Friday night, and I’m sitting here staring at my new
assistant like the stalker that she’s turning me into, and I realize there is nowhere else I’d rather be. I get to watch her freely as Jase and I sit back and pretend to be following the conversation.
“I miss this, Royce.” “What are you talking about?” I ask her. We have yet to take a single step toward the door that gets us out of here. My best friends are enjoying this moment too much for my liking. “Plane Royce. The gentleman who helped me over my fear. He’s nicer than broody CEO Royce.” “Babe, you want some popcorn?” Jase asks.
“Thank you for that. You helped me so much.” He nods. “And tonight. It looks like I need to add savior to the list.” “Just yours,” he says softly.
I want her, but I can’t have her. She’s all I think about, but I can’t have her.
“I like them. Just because I have tattoos doesn’t mean I’m not a professional.”
“I can’t answer that, Sawyer. Not really. I know that ever since the moment I laid eyes on you, you’ve been all I can think about. I know that I don’t like that you hung out with my brothers. I know that I like you in my car next to me, in my house, in my arms. I like it all. I know that you work for me and that complicates the hell out of things, but the way you make me feel when I’m with you….”
“That’s it!” Grant swims after her, but she’s faster and swims to me, wrapping herself back around me. “He can’t save you.” “He can,” I answer for her. Grant’s smiling at the two of us. “He won’t be by your side all day.” He takes two fingers and points at his eyes, then points them at Sawyer. “I’m watching you, blondie,” he teases.
“Please, Lord, don’t let me wreck this car,” I mumble under my breath. I feel his hot breath against my cheek. “Relax, I’m right here.” His lips press against my neck right under my ear. “Not helping, Royce.” “Take us home.”
“Come here,” I murmur, reaching for her. My hand slides behind her neck, and my lips press against hers. This kiss is different from all the others. It’s not hurried or ignited by the chemistry between us. No, this one says I’m sorry I have to leave, and I’ll miss you. Both I find to be true.
“I want her, damn it. Are you happy? I want her more than my next breath,”
“You tell them that it’s none of their business. You tell them that you’re mine.” “Am I yours?” “Yes.”
“Does that mean you’re mine?” she counters. That twisting feeling is back; only this time, it’s my heart that feels constricted at her question. “Yeah, baby. I’m all yours,”
“I’m not hiding you, hiding us from them. We’re in this, right?”
When I say you’re mine, and I’m yours, I mean that with all that I am.
“When you experience the magic, you’ll know it. That’s when you know it’s real. That’s when you know you found her. I could see it in you. She wasn’t your magic son.” “Magic,” I murmur in her ear. It’s as if the stars have aligned, and everything is right in my world. All because of the woman lying beneath me. I don’t have an explanation for how I feel about her. It’s been a hot minute, yet my heart beats faster for her, and the thought of losing her has panic welling up inside me.
She’s everything I never knew I needed or wanted. Standing here under the moonlight and the star-filled sky, I vow I’ll do whatever it takes to make her mine. For now and for always. She doesn’t realize it yet, and it’s too soon to tell her, but Sawyer stole my heart tonight. Here, in my favorite place, on my family’s property, I found the love of my life.
It’s the best night of my life. Hands down. The beautiful woman in my arms gave me a piece of herself, and in turn, I gave her all of me. I have never felt this kind of peace or contentment. I owe that all to her.
“We have to be at Mom and Dad’s at five,” he tells me casually. “For?” I ask, but then I remember their Sunday dinners. “Sunday dinner.” “That’s a family thing.” “You’re right, it is. And as far as I’m concerned, you’re my family. Sunday dinners are just as sacred as the lake. It’s serious members only,” he says, his eyes boring into mine.
You’re mine, and I’m yours. Never question if I want to be involved in your life. I don’t care if it’s to tell me you bought a pair of shoes on sale, or if it’s spending time with your best friend and her fiancé, I’m your guy, Sawyer. I want all the good, all the bad, and everything in between.”
“I’m falling hard, Sawyer. So damn hard.” “Can we make a deal?” I pause and feel him nod his agreement. “I’ll catch you if you catch me.”
It’s not long before I’m drifting off to sleep, and just before sleep claims me, I think I hear him whisper the words, “I love you,” but I’m not sure.
It’s been four months today since I first laid eyes on the love of my life.
“I love you,” I tell her, my voice soft. “I choose you to be my family, baby. That’s better than blood. I want you. I choose you.”
He leans down and kisses me. “You’re still mine for the weekend, right?” he asks. “For as long as you want me.” “Forever, Sawyer. I want you forever.”
“Because I need you moved. I need you living in our house sooner rather than later. We have the space. Keep it, donate it, sell it, trash it, I don’t care as long as we share an address.”
