While there are many great individuals who are engineers and transportation professionals, I have found the internal dialogue of the profession to be stuck in a place of comfortable tension for a long time. There is comfort in the sense that those working on transportation projects have a degree of credibility and prestige earned during the highway-building era, privilege that is kept alive by established bureaucracies and large budgets.
