Traffic signals do not improve the efficiency of transportation systems. They do the opposite, creating environments where drivers can either travel at dangerous speeds (green light) or must be stationary (red light). The result is a lower average travel speed, unnecessary and excessive delays, and more dangerous trips. The result of traffic signals is an environment of aggression, where a green light licenses a driver to take ownership of public space to the exclusion of others.
