World War II still has a strong hold on our collective memories and imaginations; it is not only a part of history but also a part of our communal mythology, as the many books, fiction and nonfiction, published every year testify.

How do we know what we know, and when do we know it? Why does a good person become a bad person? What power does a citizen have against the state?

The reader wants to be informed but she longs to be entertained.

God grant it is a true leader and no black angel they follow so joyously.

In a very short time they turned into sworn Nazis. They refused to listen to the slightest criticism about Hitler.

I wanted to write about what the Nazis were doing and show the American public what happens to real, living people swept up in a warped ideology.
