The IHME works closely with the Gates Foundation, which gave it $279 million in a 10-year-grant in 2017. Its mission statement says it “provides rigorous measurement and analysis of the world’s most prevalent and costly health problems.” Its model purported to forecast deaths, hospitalizations, and ventilator needs for every state and many countries.
