“Now,” Jonah said, his gaze intent. “The favor…I want from you… Remember?” I sat forward in the chair. “Name it.” “Kacey…” My voice stuck in my throat. I coughed it free. “What about her?” “You love her.”
“Take care of Kacey. Please. She’ll need you. She’s strong. But if she falls, help her… Love her, Theo. This life is…short. Don’t hold back. Okay?”
And his last words. Love her…
The light in your eyes—in your heart—has dimmed, but it is not put out. Let it roar once again.”
He asked her to love again. He asked me to love her. What the fuck, Jonah?
“Jonah,” I whispered. “I’m going to try this. I have to try to let you go now. Because, I think…it’s what you want. Isn’t it? It’s what you’ve been trying to tell me. I don’t know if I can let go entirely. But tonight, I’m going to try.”
“Live in the stars, baby. Okay?”
I closed my eyes. I inhaled. You are a universe… I exhaled. No regret, only love… And on the currents of that soft breath, I whispered to Jonah, “Goodnight, love. I love you. I will always love you…”
You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same.—
“Where there is ruin, there is hope for treasure.”
And once I accepted he was gone, I was free. Not free of the love we had. I’ll carry that with me forever. I’ll love him forever. But free to start again. A new chapter.”
“I see you, Theo. I see you. If Jonah was the glue that held us together, you’re the rock we set our backs to. I’m proud of you for that.” His chin quivered, his voice cracked. “I’m so proud you’re my son.”
“Love again,” I murmur. “He told me to love again, and I do. So much.” “He told me to love you.” Theo’s warm, soft eyes meet mine. “But I already did. So much.”
