Some things break when you put too much pressure on them, but those shards they break into can be twice as deadly.
“You threw away my love for something cheap and replaceable. I hope that, wherever you go after this, you remember that.”
What does wrong mean anyway? And how do you know if something is right?
“It is,” I say, “but I hate you for even being able to recognize that, through the blindness of your love for me.”
“You’re not alone, Bernadette. You never were. If you need to fall, let your knees go and I’ll catch you.”
“I stalked you, Bernadette,” Cal says with a sigh, his shoulders slumping slightly. “There is no other way to put it. I can’t romanticize it or explain it. I’m sure it isn’t healthy.” He looks back up at me, but there’s no shame or regret in his gaze. None at all. “I’d do it all over again though, if given the chance. We are beautiful poison, not perfume.”
I look down at Bernadette and I know then why the universe created me. And that was to take care of her—whether she likes it or not.

When you accept a person for who they are, you don’t choose bits and pieces. You accept every part of them, right down to the rotten bits. Because everybody wants somebody to love their rottenness.
