a person locking themselves in their room during an argument or snapping at a partner and raising their voice after a long day of work may not meet any classical definition of abuse, it would fall squarely within the category of proto-abusive behavior that can evolve into classic abuse through a number of channels. Proto-abusive behavior lowers the quality of a relationship even when it does not evolve into classic abuse.
