However controversial Israel’s self-characterization is, no one is asking the United States, European Union, Arab League, Non-Aligned Movement states, or anyone else to acknowledge it. It is the Palestinians’ seal of approval for this law, and theirs alone, that Israel demands when it calls for Palestinian recognition of Israel’s “right to exist as a Jewish state.” This is not a pragmatic demand, and it is certainly not one that has any connection to progressive values of any sort.
