And in 1877, when the federal government ended its commitment to Reconstruction and withdrew military forces from the South, this opposition consolidated power with astonishing speed. Almost overnight, communities across the United States, especially (though not exclusively) in the South,35 reestablished a hierarchical racial order as the basis of social and political life.
