My late grandfather was a police officer in the Indian Railways. Sometime in the sixties, when he was in his thirties, he received reports of a constable raping young boys in the quarters. He did not immediately understand what this meant. Fifty years later, he remembered being shocked. “I did not know of either of these phenomena—where some men desire other men instead of women; or where children, especially boys, are seen as sexual beings.”
