The socioreligious understanding of gender roles and interpersonal relationships is deeply rooted in patriarchy. Broadly, a ‘good’ ‘inside’ woman is seen as the possession of her father and other men in her maiden family, and later of her husband. She is allowed no agency, and none is ever ascribed. A man is seen as responsible for, if not the owner of, all the women in his family—sisters, mother, wife, daughters. He is attributed with all the agency in these relationships.
