That ‘false promise to marry’ equalled rape had been a hotly debated provision in India’s rape laws. In January 2019, the Supreme Court unwisely ruled that consensual sex cannot be called rape after a relationship ends and the man declines to marry the woman, for whatever reason98. Conversely, legislators the world over are pushing for sex induced through fraud, deception or impersonation to be criminalized99.
