at the very heart of Shelley’s political program of liberation lies the matter of sexual love, for it is love that equates to happiness and freedom. Restraints on love may well help the commercial marketplace function better, but they are nonetheless restraints on human flourishing. As happiness is the foundation of morality, so the liberating of love is a moral and political imperative.
