Then Lord Griffith Stanwick, second son, who had never denied himself anything he wanted, strode away, denying himself the only thing he’d ever truly desired.
Did he not understand that she cared for him? Did he think she went around kissing any gent who caught her fancy? Although even if she did, only one had ever come close. This one. This stubborn man who didn’t seem to have it within him to ask for help of any kind—not from her, not from his family, not from anyone. While she admired his independence, it also frustrated her. He was alone, so alone.
But Griff was learning that the truth didn’t bring peace. It brought only misery. Because the truth was—and had been for longer than he’d realized—he loved Kathryn. Loved her with a strength of conviction and passion that was terrifying. It had prompted him to write the duke in order to ensure she gained what she desired.
As his laughter circled her, she’d never treasured any sound more and feared she might never have another moment such as this, when she felt so loved and loved so much in return.
The duke glanced back over his shoulder. “A foolish whim on my part. I was waiting for her to look at me with as much yearning as she’d directed your way that day in the park.”
