but his focus was outside, where his mate was dealing with something for the first time as a representative of their pack. He didn’t even know how significant his gesture was, but to Vaughn it was everything.
“Family is the people in your heart, not just the people in your blood.”
The other cubs were settled beside him, their animals seeking comfort from the man who had quickly become a parent to them. A mate. A true alpha-mate at that. Sam was their miracle, their magic. A gift meant just for them.
“We’re home and we’re safe,” Sam whispered against the scruff of Vaughn’s neck. “We will figure this out and keep each other safe. We will give these kids a fantastic life to make up for the hell they’ve been through. It won’t be perfect, but it’ll be ours. And they’ll never have to worry about being safe or fed or loved again.”
“Did you at least do something fun?” Vaughn asked. He rounded the table and took a seat across from them. “I mean, if you’re going to rebel, rebel well, am I right?” “Don’t encourage him!” Sam pretended to be horrified, but Henry knew better.
Ollie snorted. “Daddy hears everything. He always knows when I want to come into his room in the mornings to snuggle. He wakes Papa up and tells him to put his pajamas on. Why doesn’t Papa sleep in his pajamas like we do?” “He gets hot,” Emily said. “I asked him. He said Daddy is super hot.”
“It is, Papa. Very important. Can we talk in your room? Cause you say you and Daddy do private stuff in there.” Papa made a noise and turned bright red.
Even Ben, and he was a lot bigger than Papa. But he knew Papa would keep him safe, just as much as their alpha would.
“Who’s my favorite Ollie in the whole wide world?” Papa asked as he carried Ollie into the kitchen. “Me,” Ollie said.
“Your imagination is running away with you again.” Sawyer scoffed. “You tell me how that house went up so fast then. Go on. I’m waiting. Moneybags McDuck is throwing wads of cash around and making everyone jump to his whims. There’s probably a solid gold toilet in there.”
Draco sighed. “Yes, I will shift into my dragon and light marshmallows on fire so you can make s’mores.” Sawyer cracked up and pulled Draco into another hug. “And that is why you are now, and always will be, my best friend.” Draco couldn’t help the way his arms tightened, instinctively trying to keep Sawyer as close as possible. “Promise?” “I swear it,” Sawyer replied.
“Merlin’s beard, that’s hot,” Henry moaned. Draco snickered and Sawyer pulled away from Eduard to shoot him a frown. “Did you just quote Harry Potter?” “Oh come on,” Henry said. “I was a boy wizard. I mean my dads practically said Yer a wizard, Henry when they found me. Of course I was obsessed with Harry Potter.”

“Good morning, Master Sawyer. I prepared you a restorative drink.” Sawyer sighed and Andvari had to bite back a laugh. “Cecil, buddy, I appreciate you more than you know. I swear I do, but do those drinks have to taste like you dug up something dead and marinated it in sewage?” Cecil’s lips twitched, but he managed to keep his butler-cool. “I prefer to marinate in the blood of our enemies, sir. Shall I change to sewage?”
Eduard snagged Henry’s arm when he started to walk away. “You are amazing,” Eduard said. “I am in awe of your gifts and I thank the goddess every day that she gave me the gift of you.” Henry couldn’t quite help the tears that formed in his eyes. He stepped back to Eduard and wrapped his arms around Eduard’s waist.
