“There is no side of you that is not as beautiful as the other half. Not a single inch isn’t stunning.”
“A cell is a cell, no matter how comfortable it is,” I told him.
He lifted his mouth from mine, his eyes nearly luminous as he stared down into my wide ones. “But we will have that conversation later,” he promised, thrusting the sword into my hand. “Make me feel incompetent and kill more than me, Princess.”
“I’m not going to stop fighting you.” “I wouldn’t want you to.”
“You’re so incredibly violent.”
My senses stretched out, and it was like a cord formed between Casteel and me, connecting us.
“You are so incredibly beautiful when you’re angry.”
He was both the villain and the hero, the monster and the monster-slayer.
“There should always be dignity in death,” I said once I found my voice. “No matter what.”
“Would you like me to cut your food for you?” “Would you like me to knock you off this bench?” He chuckled deeply. “Cas is right. You are incredibly violent.”
Kieran leaned over, dipping his chin. “Nicknames are often reserved for friends. I don’t believe you consider us friends.”
“You’re beautiful when you’re quiet and somber, but when you laugh? You rival the sunrise over the Skotos Mountains.”
“You seem to know a lot about that book.” “I love that fucking book,” he said, and my jaw ached from how hard I was clenching it.
I was the fire, and Casteel was the air that fed it.
And all I wanted in that moment was to bring warmth back to him. “I still want to stab you.” His head shot in my direction. “Just not as frequently,” I amended.
I was in love with him, even though that love had been built on a foundation of lies.
A hand caught my wrist in the shadows of the room, and a voice whispered, “Are you going to stab me in the heart? Again?”
I fell for you when you were Hawke, and I kept falling for you when you became Casteel.”
It’s you. It’s me. It’s us.
How your stupid dimples are infuriating, but I look for them every time you smile because I know that’s a real smile.
“Your heart, Poppy? It is a gift I do not deserve.” He placed his hands on my knees as he lifted his gaze to mine. “But it is one I will protect until my dying breath. I don’t know what that means.”
There is nothing I will protect more fiercely or with more devotion, Poppy.
We wouldn’t borrow from tomorrow’s problems.
“You’re an absolutely stunning, murderous little creature,” he murmured.
The cut had closed, but across the center of my palm was a thin swirl of vibrant gold that shimmered even with the sunlight obscured by clouds.
The unnatural clouds started to scatter, and sunlight broke through as Jasper smiled. “Nyktos, even asleep, approves of this union.”
“Feisty,” Casteel murmured. “I like it.” “I’m this close to shooting her in the face with an arrow,” I warned him. “I like that, too,” he replied.
That even as uncertain as our future was, there was one.
He stood right there. Hawke. Casteel. The Prince of Atlantia. The Dark One. My husband. My heartmate.
