The facts are better understood if they are seen as a consequence of a person’s inability to distinguish between shadow and soul. This evokes deep feelings of shame, guilt and fear whenever such an individual enters into a communion with another soul. In other words, there are infantile and regressive elements in the shadow which should have been assimilated and integrated into the total personality, but this has not happened because of the experience of severe rejection by the internalized negative parental archetype.
