From 1999 to 2017, more than 700,000 Americans died from drug overdoses—and 400,000 of the deaths were due to opioids. To put that into perspective, 405,000 Americans died in World War II. Opioids have killed as many Americans as did Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan combined.
