Surprise, followed by warmth, spread through her when she heard a rumbling purr emanate from his chest.
“I’m sorry, Luka. If you weren’t drugged and you asked me to fool around with you, I would without a second thought, believe me.”
Luka dragged the pitiful-looking man to Alice and placed him at her feet, then stared fixedly at her. Vanessa chimed in from behind her, “Well, I guess he knows how to fetch.”
“You have been so brave and resilient these past weeks. Now that I have met you, I can see you are also very forgiving, kind, and compassionate. I am sure Luka would be infatuated with you in any state of mind.”
Maxu finally allowed his unwavering gaze to slide down Luka’s body, settling at his wrists. Luka followed the fixed direction of Maxu’s stare and had to take a step back. Blue mating marks circled his wrists.
I want to take off clothes with Luka, not put them on!
He’d kill for her to smile at him like that.
“You’re his mate. He isn’t yours. If he doesn’t have enough sense to see how lucky he is to have found you, that’s not your problem. He needs you. You don’t need him.” He shot a glare toward Luka, then leaned in to whisper, “You tell me if he acts like a pishot, and I’ll make sure to hack into his home’s programming and make his life a living hell.”
She’d give him a chance, but she needed to hold on to her newfound strength. If he blew it, that would be the end. No second chances. No seeing the good in someone that just didn’t exist. No attempting to fix him. Alien or not, he could either win her over or live his life as a mated man without his mate.
If he wants to apologize, I’ll hear him out, but I’m not going to let myself be walked on all over again. He’s been nothing but rude to me since we escaped, and I don’t deserve that. I was abducted and locked up too!
Was he ever going to be able to leave this bed? If she’d allow it, he’d happily stay here forever.
You are my mate. And even though your human body has learned to forget how to recognize me, I am yours. Deep down, you don’t want a normal guy, and I’ll prove it. I’ll give you your space, but I won’t give up. That’s a promise, Alice.”
smiled. “There’s something endearing about a guy who makes you the center of his world. As long as he’s not trying to control you, I don’t see a problem in how you feel about him.”
it. “When I’m not near you, I feel…wrong. I walk around all day, unable to concentrate. Like I’ve forgotten something but can’t recall what it is. It’s maddening.”
“Oh, and one other thing,” he said, waiting for her to meet his eyes. “You should know that right before the meeting a few days ago, Luka broke a bone in his lower leg. His fibula. He tried to ignore it so he could make it to the meeting. Walked all the way around the lake just to see you.”
He was proving she didn’t need to step into the flames to feel as though she were on fire.
Crap. He is a goddamned closet romantic! She could barely handle her sexual attraction to Luka as it was, but now he revealed that he had a romantic side? She could practically feel her ovaries yelling at her to say, “We can be happy together!”
Luka grinned down at her again, the corner of his eyes crinkling, then pulled her into a hug. “You feel everything so deeply, don’t you? That’s wonderful.”
He acted exactly the way she wished people would act with her, and that scared the ever-loving shit out of her.
“I don’t know if you can understand the lengths a Clecanian would go to, to recognize their mate. I’d do it again if I had to.”
He would protect her. She felt it. No man from her past had ever made her feel quite as safe as Luka did.
Damn gorgeous man with his rugged Indiana Jones scientist-explorer thing.
Making her come had brought him pure masculine satisfaction, but knowing that she liked who he was made him feel…so much more.
He might not be able to have her now, but he felt certain she wouldn’t want anyone else.
“Look at you, giving pep talks and going out in public. Alice is rubbing off on you.”
Nobody had ever done anything like this for him, and he was completely puzzled as to what he’d done to earn it.
Luka snorted. He’d have happily eaten tar if she’d gone to the trouble of putting it on a plate.
Being abducted by aliens had taught her a few things about herself. Despite her insecurities, she was passionate and resilient and brave. She needed a man who pushed her and allowed her to continue to flourish, not one who decided what was best for her without her having a say. She didn’t mind if he got mad about her decisions. They could scream and fight like cats and dogs, but at the end of the day, she needed to know he wouldn’t try to keep her from doing what she wanted.
“I’d intended to paint them before I left home today, but…it felt wrong not to be able to look at them.” Her heart pitter-pattered. Like a wedding ring he doesn’t want to take off.
His mate didn’t need gifts or flattery. If support and freedom were what made her smile and glow like this, he’d do whatever it took to quell his possessive instincts.
She leaned in and gave him a soft kiss. “I’m your mate. I’m yours.”
“Over the last few days, I’ve grown to like you more than I thought possible, but my soul knew it loved you even when I was drowning in the void of my mind. I’m humbled you feel I’m worthy of your love.”
“Are those words taken lightly on your planet? Because, they aren’t here. I love you, Alice. I’ve never said that to anyone else and never will. Are you sure about me? About us? There won’t be any going back after this.” Alice couldn’t contain the happy tears that streaked down her face. “I’m all yours, forever.”
Alice was more than he could’ve ever dreamed her to be. She cared about everyone and everything. When he was with her, he felt he could finally exhale. She allowed him to be himself. Hell, she allowed him to discover himself. He’d been fixated on work and achievement his whole life, but with her he’d rediscovered facets of his personality he’d forgotten he had.
“It doesn’t matter, though. I can’t miss home, because I am home.” She ran a hand through his hair. “You’re my home. I love you.” He beamed. “I love you too.”
