Love comes in all forms, shapes, and packages. But it is still love. The greatest gift we can share is our hearts. This one is for you. To love in all its glory. And to my Matthew who epitomizes it.
“Two years ago. My mother died in January, and he followed about six months later. He couldn’t bear to live without her.” “That’s beautiful. Two souls so tightly connected they need each other to survive.” She paused. “I’m sorry you lost them.”
“You plan on treating me like the kid you think you hired? Fine. But I expect you to be polite, courteous, and fair. I don’t expect to be punished because I have breasts instead of a dick. I’ll do my work, and I will show you the respect you deserve as my boss as long as you show me the respect I deserve as an employee and a human being.” She drew in a much-needed breath. “You understand me, Maxx?”
“It suits you. You’re so sexy, you need two x’s—like a warning label.”
My dad used to hug my mom close if she was upset or having a difficult day. “Come along, sweetheart. I got you,” he would croon as he rocked her. “Let the day go. Just let it go.”
His words drifted through my head. “I didn’t like it. Don’t do it again.” I wondered as I went through the motions of making coffee if, perhaps, he was a little more mine than I realized. Maybe he was a little more mine than he planned.
Red. Charly. Another word exploded in my head. Mine. For the first time ever, the last one didn’t upset me.
I pressed a kiss to her head. “You brought the sun back into my life, Red.”
She was brilliant. I never wanted to be without her. In the garage or in my personal life. And still, I couldn’t tell her.
I was completely in love with Charly. “I know.” Her voice, low and raspy, broke the silence, and I snapped up my head, meeting her green gaze in the low light. She smiled and lifted my hand covering hers to her mouth and kissed my knuckles. “I love you too, Maxx.”
“Come along, sweetheart. I got you,” he crooned and rocked me. “Let the day go. Just let it go.”
