There’s no other way. If our politics continue as they are, then we have no chance of ever getting a handle on the debt. If we insist that the debt be our priority now, we’ll break the country. We’ve lived in and on debt for a long time. Yes, it’s unsustainable over the long term—but what is “long term”? If it’s next year or even the next decade, then we’re already finished: there’s no way we can solve the problem in that short a time. If it’s a generation or more, then we have a chance. But to have that chance, we have to create the political conditions for a political consensus to emerge.
