One thing that might help would be a new relationship with Russia. Rapprochement with Moscow seems almost impossible to imagine after four years of unhinged—and almost entirely false—anti-Russian propaganda. Yet our two countries share a number of common interests on which we could profitably cooperate if the nonsense could be put behind us. Russia is a “threat” to Europe only insofar as Europe’s leaders allow themselves to be threatened—for instance, by voluntarily yoking their countries’ energy supplies to a pipeline Moscow can turn on and off at will.
