That’s because Caesarism sometimes, though not always, offers the prospect of avoiding conflict. It may be sad to witness a proud old republic surrender its liberty to the rule of one, but if the alternative is bitter and bloody civil war, it becomes more difficulty to condemn such a transition out of hand.
