The boys had themselves been, and were still being, harassed—viciously and profanely jeered by a group called the Black Hebrew Israelites. Not only that, but they were hardly “privileged”—just ordinary middle-class kids from a part of Red America with (at the time) an unemployment rate about 25 percent above the national average.
