Even though Lana had set up her permanent office out of Moose Springs, she still traveled a lot for work. Rick was a homebody, although he’d accompanied her a few times overseas. Easton didn’t know how they managed to make the separation work, but every time they were together, it was clear both were incredibly happy.
circuitous
“Hollywood is the only place where almost thirty makes someone feel old,” River grumbled to herself,
Taking her crew up Mount Veil was a risk, but like a dyno, when you jumped, you had to trust yourself.
Graham was many things. Low maintenance wasn’t one of them.
“How can you see an expression?” Zoey tilted her head. “All I see is beard.”
Grumpy, yes. Mad, no.
“Great minds think alike.” “Or redundantly,”
If looks could kill, Easton would be bleeding out with an ice pick wedged into his own crevasse.
He hesitated, not sure what he wanted to say. Yes, because…well…yes. And no, because…definitely no. But probably yes.
He’d drunk from glacier pools and never seen anything as blue. There were worse things than being chewed on for a while.
“There’s no accounting for taste.”
voice was a warm, low rumble, like rocks snuggling up to each other.
That voice. She could wrap herself up in that voice and cuddle on the couch all day in it.
“Did he move in slow motion for anyone else? Like, step, step, towel, wet hair flip, sexy naked rescue.”
“He’s a handsome boy, isn’t he?” Ruby Lou said, smiling at her grandson proudly. Yes. Absolutely. The sanctity and innocence of white towels had forever been ruined.
“And, Easton, stop looking like a Dothraki. You’re ruining the shot.” “A what?”
“No, you listen. Both of you. It’s one thing to go up there to see if you can. But it becomes an obsession. Your daddy had the poison, Easton, and you’re getting it too. There’s more to life than how high you can stand on a piece of rock.”
Family is one thing you don’t let anyone put their hands on.”
They weren’t even on the mountain yet, and River could already tell this was going to be a problem.
Feeling abnormally shy,
“First rule of a documentary: you document.”
There was a looseness in Easton’s shoulders, a calmness in his face as he gazed up at the mountain.
A hundred dollars down, she’d be willing to bet the love of Easton Lockett’s life was the majestic peak rising in front of them.
Being tied so tightly together was harder when real life got in the way.
willing to change who he was for someone else.
“It’s going to be okay,” he told her. “I know you don’t believe me, but it will.” “Maybe.” Taking a long drag on the cigarette in her mouth, she shook her head. “Probably. But one day, it won’t. Are you ready for that? Because I’m sure not.”
Being hot would only get him so far. There was no fixing boring.
“You and the fluffball have to go home. Feel free to fill out a comment card.” Easton’s teasing look turned more heated as his voice grew huskier. “You’ve always been ready, River.” Well, if he wanted to put it that way… “Are you filming this?” Bree muttered to Jessie. “What do you think?”
Naps were almost as good as kisses above twelve thousand feet.
“I didn’t want to share you.” This time, Easton’s voice was stronger, surer. “I know they all want to see you, but I want you the most.”
“River, this doesn’t have to be anything. No pressure. But we started out beneath the stars and I thought…”
“Sometimes messy is the best part. Sometimes it’s worth it. You always were for me. I’m betting you were for River too.”
There was nothing anyone could do to fill the gaping wound in his chest where his heart used to be.
And because he wasn’t a good responsible friend but a best friend who threw caution to the wind, Graham plopped down on the opposite side of the couch with a fresh six-pack of beers.
“Making sure good intentions don’t turn into vomit aspiration. Plus, what kind of friend would I be if I wasn’t here to help you greet the sun? How do you feel?”
“When I went through the Veil, I came out a different man. And not for the better. It’s not fun to get a good look at yourself and realize you aren’t half as brave as you want to be.”
“It’s not about being brave. Either it’s in your blood or it isn’t.”
“I told her I’d love her with every last breath I take.”
The bag slung over his shoulder wasn’t enough to pack an entire life in, but it was big enough to pack a week’s worth of clothes and a heart bigger than the man in front of her. His courage for showing up there left her breath caught in her lungs.
As for the rest of it, I figured wherever you were at seemed a whole lot better than missing you alone.”
You don’t always know where you’ll end up in life. All that matters is that you’re next to the right person for the journey.
