“So what role are you playing? First man to fall off a mountain on film?”
Yeah. She’d noticed the shoulder thing too.
“I ate person dust.” “It really is rust.” Probably. He hoped.
The man was hot, but damn, Easton was boring.
Below them, the marmot scuttled around in a circle, frantic at being left behind.
“Hey, Easton?” “Yeah?” “Does the marmot seem off to you?” “It’s totally bonkers.” They sat in silence for a moment, then he spoke. “Hey, River?” “Hmm?” “I like climbing with you.”
Its particular suffocating brand of love should have been annoying, but for some reason, the furball was growing on him.
“Watch the whole Veil thing be an elaborate ruse to get a running head start.”
He was going to marry her if she let him. Also if she didn’t kill him first.
The next morning, the marmot broke up with Easton. Its little marmot bags were packed. It was moving on. Sometimes, love wasn’t enough, not when you deserved better. And clearly, the marmot knew it deserved better. Getting relocated out of the tent for River must have been the straw that broke the love story’s back.
“I’m never leaving you again.”
“Lead the way. I’m right behind you.” Which was how, at fourteen thousand feet, River fell head over heels in love without once touching the ground.
“River. If you can’t wake Easton up, you need to leave him.” “What?” There was no way she could have heard Ben right. “Listen to me. He’s too heavy for you, and those temperatures are too dangerous for you to stay outside in. Leave Easton, get to the tent, and then get warmed up as best you can. When you feel strong enough, take him something to wrap around him. But do not stay out with him.”
“I didn’t want to share you.” This time, Easton’s voice was stronger, surer. “I know they all want to see you, but I want you the most.”
“Sometimes messy is the best part. Sometimes it’s worth it. You always were for me. I’m betting you were for River too.”
The only problem was his mate was gone, and…well…wolves mated for life.
“Wish she coulda been more like Z-Bear. Or the marmot. The marmot was all in. Shoulda been a marmot.”
“You want to tell me about the marmot?” “Okay.”
