When immigrants are convenient and beneficial to our economy or political agenda, we use the words hardworking, deserving, courageous, and freedom-loving. When our economy dips and jobs are suddenly scarce or we hear too many people speaking languages other than English on the street and “our way of life” seems threatened by “the other,” immigrants become menacing, criminal, contaminated, and a drain on society.
