It really mattered who the president was in federal cases, he believed. Back under George W. Bush, Bates called the federal courthouse “the Hall of Horrors” because people who went in never came out. Under Barack Obama, all of that started to change. Trump seemed dead set on changing it back, to before the Bush era even, nominating staunchly revanchist, Confederate-sympathizing Jeff Sessions as attorney general.
