One of the unacknowledged truths of diversity is that living among those unlike you won’t automatically lead to enlightened views. Diversity is not enough. White people are expert at compartmentalizing when it comes to race. It’s why they can love and respect individual black people while despising or misunderstanding black people in general. It’s why the “I have a black friend” defense is nonsensical. My white brothers and sisters in Christ chose Trump and his bigotry over us — not because they had to, but because they wanted to.
