He looked even better than he had six months ago – more tanned and taller, leaner and more muscular.
During their separation, something had happened to Annabeth’s feelings. They’d grown painfully intense – like she’d been forced to withdraw from a life-saving medication.
Percy rushed towards her at the same time. The crowd tensed. Some reached for swords that weren’t there.
‘On the bright side,’ Percy said, ‘both Jason and I outrank you, Octavian. So we can both tell you to shut up.’
‘Yeah.’ Percy smiled. ‘We’ve got a dam hole.’
‘One of my children recently traded an eye for the ability to make a real difference in the world.’
The seventh wheel. Leo had heard of a fifth wheel – an extra, useless piece of equipment. He figured a seventh wheel was worse.
‘I’ll come back to you.’ He kissed her on the cheek. ‘Promise.’
‘Yeah, but … I could have killed you.’ ‘Or I could have killed you,’ Percy said.
Jason shrugged. ‘If there’d been an ocean in Kansas, maybe.’ ‘I don’t need an ocean –’
Percy had never been scared of water. It was his father’s element. But since the muskeg experience he’d developed a fear of suffocation.

‘We’re staying together,’ he promised. ‘You’re not getting away from me. Never again.’
‘As long as we’re together,’ she said.
