I already knew that my life was a mess, that I was barely hanging on by a thread. I didn’t want anyone else witnessing my disaster.
I cried at everything. Sad tears. Happy tears. Overwhelmed tears. Angry tears. It was as if whenever I had an emotional overload—which was often—the release valve was my eyeballs.
Her head snapped up. “Are you kidding?” My eyes widened. “We do not let ignorant, cruel people win. That’s a rule.” Will looked at us, picking up on the tail end of the conversation. “She’s right. It’s a rule in our family, and if you hang with us, you have to follow it.”
I wasn’t going to let that infect me. If people chose to believe the lies that had been told about me over the years, so be it. I would just keep living my life.
