Despite consorting with the Klan, Jeremiah X developed personal friendships with some of the more independent civil rights leaders, such as Medgar Evers of the Mississippi NAACP. Still, under Muhammad’s orders, Jeremiah continued to cultivate commercial ties with Klan members, the White Citizens’ Councils, and other openly racist white businessmen.
