Psychologist Mike Riera advises that parents shift out of the role of being managers and into the role of consultant when children become teens. I think the same advice holds for parenting adult children. We can’t protect our offspring from making terrible choices any more than our parents could’ve protected us. But our role isn’t to provide warnings or even advice unless the adult child has made it clear that’s what he or she wants.
