By 1720 BC they had established a capital in the eastern Nile Delta at Avaris. These rulers were called the Hyksos (Rulers of Foreign Lands).2 These Hyksos were of the same general ethnic group as Joseph. If the Pharaoh was Hyksos, then likely Potiphar was as well. His wife’s family may have been Egyptian.
