Once Abraham is old, Sarah offers her handmaiden Hagar to Abraham, “The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her” (Gen 16:2). Sarah (like everyone) is thinking about the problem of who will inherit their family.
