He did not think of philosophy primarily as an academic subject, still less as a profession. For him, philosophy was the activity of solving philosophical problems. He used to say that, just as his father had been a businessman, so he took a businesslike attitude to philosophy. He wanted to clear up philosophical problems, like a businessman clears his desk.
